How to Pose for a Photographer

Although we've been having our photos taken since kindergarten, it can still be intimidating, particularly when it's a professional shoot. As a professional photographer, I often hear my clients express the same concern when I bring out my camera, saying, "I have no idea what I'm doing." If you find yourself in a similar situation, here are some tips to assist you with posing.

  • Your Photographer will guide you:

When you hire a Professional Photographer, they are typically skilled in directing their subjects. They don't anticipate you to pose like an experienced model; rather, they will presume you lack prior posing experience and will coach, instruct, and guide you into position for approximately 90% of the photos taken.

  • Never directly face the camera:

Unless specifically directed otherwise, avoid facing the camera straight on. This angle often makes the face appear rounder and less flattering. I typically have my subjects turn their heads slightly away from the camera in all my photographs.

  • Natural looking Smile:

For most photos, both the photographer and likely you will prefer a smile. So, when the camera is aimed at you, offer a natural smile. Avoid overthinking it, as that can make it appear forced. It might sound cliché, but try to think of something or someone that brings you joy. That often helps.

  • Use Soft Touches:

If a photographer asks you to position your hand somewhere (such as on your face, hip, shoulder, etc.), do it gently. For instance, if I ask you to place your hand on your cheek, avoid pressing so hard that your cheek is distorted. Instead, lightly rest your hand on your cheek, just enough to make contact. This approach is also relevant for most male poses.

  • Turn away from the camera:

As mentioned above regarding the positioning of your face, for the most flattering poses, angle your body slightly away from the camera.

  • Stay Calm and Confident:

The most important tip I can give you is to relax and enjoy yourself. The best photos are the ones that look natural and not posed at all. Plus, If you've hired yourself a professional with an impressive portfolio, you should have nothing to worry about. Your photographer will tell you what to do and how to do it.

I truly hope this article has eased your nerves and boosted your confidence for your upcoming portrait session. If you have any questions or concerns that weren't covered here, feel free to reach out to me at devonvp@gmail.com.
